Visions of La Regenta
Exhibition
The University of Oviedo celebrates the 140th anniversary of the publication of La Regenta, a landmark work of nineteenth-century Spanish narrative written by Clarín, with an exhibition at the Central University Library. From 18 December 2025 to 16 January 2026, Visions of La Regenta. Editions and Conversations around Clarín’s Novel will be open to the public.
This exhibition, based on the bibliographic holdings of the University of Oviedo Library, traces the history of the novel through a dual perspective: on the one hand, the philological and humanistic recovery of the novel and its author; on the other, an effort to restore Asturias’s democratic memory and republican tradition through the figure of Rector Leopoldo Alas Argüelles—son of the writer—who was murdered by the coup forces in 1937.
Thus, from opera to cinema, and including theatre, comics, illustration, and translations, the exhibition also explores Oviedo’s enduring connection with this text, always with the university institution as the backbone of the scientific and civic recovery of its bond with Clarín’s immortal novel.
I have the great honour of curating this exhibition, promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for University Extension and Cultural Outreach, the University of Oviedo Library, and the University Institute for Gender and Diversity.
